Orpheus bidding farewell to Eurydice. We can see Hermes contemplating the farewell of Orpheus and Eurydice, when he leaves her in hades.

Dated: 410 BC and attributed to Alcamenes of Paros, because of its style close to Phidias.  Museum: Archaeological Museum of Naples.  Style: Greek.  Material: Marble.

According to the myth, the poet Orpheus, after losing his beloved Eurydice, descended to the underworld to rescue her. With his music he enchanted the Can Cerberus and Hades and Persephone themselves. However, when Orpheus failed to fulfil their condition for Eurydice’s return, the god Hermes took her back to Hades.
