Description

Handcrafted mosaic in the Roman style representing an olive tree.

Dimensions: Width: 60 cm. Height: 40 cm.

Mosaics are pictorial works created with small pieces of stone, ceramic, glass, or other similar materials of various shapes and colors, called tesserae, joined with plaster or other binding agents to form decorative geometric or figurative compositions.

These mosaics are completely handmade, following the ancient Roman technique of “opus tesellatum,” a mosaic made of cubic stone tesserae.

For its creation, 8mm tesserae of natural stones and marbles of various colors have been used. It is set on mortar with a metal structure. It is prepared to be hung on a wall or used as flooring.

The Romans adopted the art of mosaics from Greece and Asia Minor starting in the 2nd century BC, following their conquest of these regions. The success of this decorative art was so great that it became an essential element for decorating the domus of wealthy Roman classes.

The decorative motifs were very varied, ranging from geometric figures to images representing elements of nature such as trees, gardens, and landscapes, or scenes with human figures based on mythology or domestic life. In this case, the most representative tree of the Mediterranean landscape, the olive tree, is depicted.
