The sculpture that we reproduce represents the god Hermes. Mercury for the Romans, in Greek mythology Hermes is the son of Zeus and the nymph Maya, the messenger and herald of the gods, the one who guides the guests on Olympus, who accompanies the heroes on their adventures and who communicates divine messages to mortals. Consequently, he is also the patron god of travellers, as well as of merchants, thieves and swindlers. Hermes is especially the conductor of souls. As such, he leads the deceased from life to death.
