Reproduction of a statue of Aesculapius with a snake coiled around his arm and standing on the cup he holds in his hand. The Roman Aesculapius, Asclepius in Greek mythology, son of Apollo, is the god of medicine and healing. He is often depicted accompanied by a snake. His sanctuaries called Asclepeion served as healing centres where priests assisted the sick. The most famous was the one in Epidaurus, Greece, where Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was trained.
