The original is a limestone sculpture. Cairo Museum. Found in Saqqara, Ancient Empire, 4th Dynasty (around 2500 BC).

The office of scribe was held in high esteem in Egypt. Scribes were trained in the Houses of Life, where they not only learnt the technique of hieroglyphic writing and its derivatives (hieratic and demotic), but also studied sacred and classical texts, and gained knowledge in other fields such as history, geography, accountancy, law, etc.

Their tutelary god was Thoth, the god of Wisdom, who was often represented as a scribe at the Judgement of the Souls presided over by Osiris, the judge of the Dead, transcribing the confession of the deceased and all the acts committed by the deceased during his lifetime.
