Recreation of an ushabti, a funerary figurine from Ancient Egypt.
Ushabtis or ushebtis (in ancient Egyptian “Usapthi: the one who responds”) were figures placed in tombs to serve the deceased in the afterlife. Many of them depict individuals in their everyday occupations, such as farmers, laborers, craftsmen, shepherds, soldiers…
The ushabtis were inscribed with passages from the Book of the Hidden Chamber, better known as the “Book of the Dead,” which would give life to the figure, enabling it to work in place of the deceased and undertake all the duties required in the other world.
