Reproduction of an Ancient Egyptian cosmetic recipient, probably a soap dish or a kohl palette. The original object is in the Louvre Museum, Paris.
The ancient Egyptians attached great importance to make-up and hygiene. Kohl (a paste made from galena, lead and other ingredients) was used by both women and men to outline the eye contour, which allowed them to protect themselves from sunlight and eye infections by preventing conjunctivitis thanks to its bactericidal properties. The Egyptians also bathed frequently and used a soapy paste made from clay and ash mixed with natural oils, which served to care for the skin and keep it moisturised, something vital in a dry climate like the Egyptian one.
