The Lady of Elche is one of the most famous sculptures of Iberian art. It dates from the 4th-5th century BC. The original is made of limestone and was found in Elche (Alicante-Spain). It is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.
The sculpture, whose features are very well perfected, may represent a divinity, although archaeologists nowadays are inclined to think that it is a lady of the aristocracy who was later deified.

The lady wears characteristic Iberian jewellery such as wheels covering her ears, necklaces and crowns with small chains and filigree. In recent analyses, a small fragment of gold leaf was discovered in one of the folds on her back. This suggests that the jewellery on the sculpture was covered with gold leaf.
