Hygieia, daughter of the god Asclepius, was an important deity in the ancient Greek world. She was the goddess of health and hygiene, and was considered the protector of people’s health and of cities. She was depicted as a young and beautiful woman, often holding a serpent or a bowl. Her cult was very popular in ancient Greece and her temples and sanctuaries were sacred places where ceremonies and rituals were performed for her veneration and for the healing of the sick.
