Bison licking itself. Upper Palaeolithic. Magdalenian period. Reproductions or inspirations in antique models.

The original comes from the excavations at La Madeleine in Tursac (France). This sculpture, made from reindeer horn, is a famous work of Palaeolithic art. Bison, along with horses, occupy a prominent place in the thinking of the ancient inhabitants of Europe. It is made in flattened high relief, a technique common among decorated propeller fragments. While the legs and body are depicted schematically, the head is engraved in great detail. The horns stand out in perspective, one in relief and the other hollowed out, as well as the tongue and the tear-tongue.
