Venus of Esquiline head. Reproduction based on the original statue exhibited in the Capitoline Museums, a Roman copy from the 1st century AD of a Greek original from the 1st century BC. The original sculpture was found in the Gardens of Lamian (one of the imperial gardens, a source of archaeological finds of classical sculptures), located on the Esquiline Hill, from which it takes its name. It soon became part of the collection of the Capitoline Museums.

Venus, known as Aphrodite in Greek mythology, is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. Born from the sea foam, her mythical origin emphasizes her connection to creation and life. Aphrodite had lovers among gods, such as Ares, the god of war, and mortals, such as Adonis, for whose death she descended to Hades, claiming him from Persephone, the queen of the underworld, who granted Adonis the return to the world of the living for six months a year, with the young man remaining in the afterlife for the remaining six months. Venus often appears accompanied by a retinue consisting of Cupid and other beings and deities, such as cherubs and nymphs, the Three Graces, or the Horae.
