Sculpture representing the Venus of Arles. The original is located in the Louvre Museum and dates back to the 1st century BC.
This Venus sculpture was discovered in the French town of Arles in the 17th century during the excavation of a well. Later, King Louis XIV moved it to Versailles to adorn the Hall of Mirrors. During the French Revolution, it became part of the confiscated property of the royal family and has been part of the Louvre collection since the museum’s foundation.
In classical mythology, Venus, identified in Rome with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The myth tells of Venus’s birth from the foam generated by the fall of the sky god Uranus’s genitals into the sea, mutilated by his son Cronus-Saturn. Venus was depicted with symbolic attributes such as the rose and the mirror, and animals like the dove or the swan, representing love in all its facets, from spiritual love and union, as Aphrodite Urania, to human desire and passion, as Aphrodite Pandemos.
Venus is attributed with love affairs with both gods and mortals, from her legitimate husband Vulcan, the god of blacksmiths and fire, or his brother Mars, the god of war, to humans like the handsome Adonis, for whose death she descended to Hades, or the father of the Trojan prince Aeneas, the mythical ancestor of the Romans.
