Venetian Lion relief, reproduction inspired by Venetian marbles.
The emblem of the city of Venice was the lion, a symbolic animal of its patron Saint Mark the Evangelist. In this relief, the lion carries a mace and is depicted in profile in a clear Renaissance style.
The representation of the evangelists with their symbolic animals dates back to the Early Middle Ages, appearing in various art forms such as painting, whether mural or in manuscript illuminations, and sculpture, from the capitals of cloisters to the statues adorning the facades of churches and cathedrals. These images continued to be used in the subsequent centuries. In this case, the Lion of Saint Mark is used as a symbol of the city and the Republic of Venice.
- The Tetramorph (from Greek “four forms”) was the representation of the four evangelists, each associated with an animal:
- The angel or man, identified with Saint Matthew; his gospel presents Jesus in his most human aspect.
- The lion is identified with Saint Mark; the lion symbolizes strength and will, related to the strength of Christ depicted in his gospel.
- The bull represents Saint Luke; this animal is associated with the heart and emotions, and in the gospel of Luke, Christ’s compassion towards humanity is conveyed.
- The eagle of Saint John; this animal represents heights, and the gospel of Saint John is considered the most elevated and mystical of the four.
