The reproduced sculpture is a detail from the work “Veiled Vestal Virgin,” Raffaelo Monti (1818–1881).
The bust of “The Veiled Vestal Virgin” was created by Raffaelo Monti in 1845 and is located in the castle of Racconigi. It is a detail from the famous sculpture of the same author “Veiled Vestal Virgin,” which is located in the Chatsworth castle, of which you can see an attached photo.
In Ancient Rome, the Vestal Virgin was a priestess consecrated to the goddess of the hearth, Vesta.
Vesta was the Roman goddess of the hearth, equivalent to Hestia in Greece, whose circular temple was located in the forum. Her cult, overseen by the Pontifex Maximus, was carried out by the Vestals, a college of priestesses responsible for keeping the fire of Vesta burning. The college was considered the oldest in Rome (according to legend, the mother of Romulus and Remus, Rhea Silvia, was a Vestal). It consisted successively of four, six, and then seven priestesses presided over by the High Priestess, the Virgo Vestalis Maxima. They took vows of chastity, and any Vestal who violated it was punished with the death penalty. The priesthood lasted thirty years, after which Vestals could marry.
Reproductions of sculptures from classical antiquity, such as this bust of the veiled Vestal, are an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to the decoration of our home.
