Veiled Vestal lady Sculpture. This sculpture represents a vestal priestess guarding a bowl with the fire of Vesta.
In this figure, we recreate the “Veiled Vestal Virgin,” by the Italian neoclassical sculptor Raffaelo Monti (1818–1881), whose original work, a photo of which is attached, is located at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, England.
The Vestals were a college of priestesses tasked with keeping the sacred fire of Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth, burning. Vesta was equivalent to Hestia in Greece, and her circular temple was located in the Roman Forum. The college was considered the oldest in Rome (according to the legend of Rome’s founders, Romulus and Remus, their mother, Rhea Silvia, was a Vestal). Throughout its existence, the college of Vestals consisted of four, then six, and eventually seven priestesses, presided over by the Chief Priestess, the Virgo Vestalis Maxima. The Vestals took a vow of chastity, and if they broke it, they were punished by death. They were held in high prestige and esteem during their 30-year priesthood, after which the Vestals were allowed to marry.
This veiled vestal sculpture is a figure of singular beauty, ideal for decoration or as a distinguished gift. The piece we offer boasts special elegance and delicacy, expressed in its lines. An excellent option for those seeking a classical and elegant work of art, whether for home decoration or for the workplace.
