Reproduction of a rhyton vase from ancient Minoan Crete with scenes of pugilists.
A rhyton is a vessel that was often used in ancient Greece in sacred sacrificial rites or in the exaltation of wine in honour of a god. In this figure a rhyton from Minoan Crete is recreated from an original found in the city of Hagia Triada (1600-1450 BC), which is on display in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
The rhyton’s decoration is divided into four horizontal zones. The upper band depicts pairs of pugilists boxing, the next band is decorated with depictions of bull-jumping, and the two lower bands show boxing scenes depicting the triumph of the victors over the vanquished in combat, with the latter lying down or kneeling in an attitude of defeat.
