The ushabti or ushapthis, “Usapthi: the one who answers”, were inscribed with a portion of the Book of the Occult Abode, better known as the “Book of the Dead”. It was believed that by reciting the text, the figure would be given a life of its own to perform in its owner’s place all the duties that would be asked of it in the other world. They also served to vouch for the deceased in relation to the possible actions he had committed in life.
