Tower of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, La Rioja. The medieval origins of Santo Domingo de la Calzada in the mid-11th century are closely linked to the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela. An important landmark on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, it became an episcopal see in 1232, when its church, begun at the end of the 11th century and extended in the second half of the 12th and beginning of the 13th, was converted into a cathedral.
The slender Baroque tower, erected between 1762 and 1767 by the architect MartÃn de Beratua, author, among other works, of the twin towers of Santa MarÃa la Redonda (Logroño), the parish church of Oyón (Alava) and Briones, is particularly noteworthy.
The tower of Santo Domingo de la Calzada has a slender shaft or first body articulated by means of hollowed pilasters on top of which there is a body of bells topped by a series of constructive and decorative elements inspired by those existing in Santa MarÃa la Redonda.
