In this piece, we reproduce the thoughtful Athena bas-relief, a sculpture found on the Acropolis of Athens in 1880. This relief depicts the goddess Athena, the patron of the city of Athens, with her usual attributes, the peplos and the Corinthian helmet, resting her head on the spear, in a thoughtful attitude. Some argue that her demeanor is one of sorrow for the destruction of Athens in the Greco-Persian Wars, commemorated in the stele in front of the goddess.
Athena was born from the head of the king of the gods, Zeus, already adult and armed. She was the patron goddess of the city of Athens, which dedicated its main temple, the Parthenon, to her, located on the Acropolis. In the temple stood a colossal statue of Athena Parthenos (“virgin”) created by the great Athenian sculptor Phidias in marble and gold, reliefs of scenes from the procession dedicated to the goddess, and on the pediments, two scenes from the life of the goddess are represented: her birth and her dispute with the sea god Poseidon for the patronage of Athens. She was also the protector of Greek heroes like Perseus or Odysseus. Her attributes include the olive tree, the owl, the helmet, the spear, the aegis, and the shield with the head of Medusa.
Decorating with reproductions of classical reliefs featuring characters from classical mythology, such as this relief of Athena, is an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to the spaces in our homes, both indoors, in living rooms, offices, and libraries, and outdoors, in gardens and terraces.
