In this sculpture, we reproduce a sphinx from ancient Greek art, dated between 575 and 560 B.C. The original statue is currently housed in the Archaeological Museum of Delphi in Greece.
The sculpture we reproduce is a statue originating from the island of Naxos, whose inhabitants donated it to the Oracle of Delphi, thereby gaining the right of preference to consult the oracle. Its function was to protect the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, originally placed atop a column located south of the Sanctuary.
The sphinx is a mythical being with a human head, lion’s body, and wings. According to Greek mythology, the sphinx posed riddles to passersby and killed those who could not solve them. In other traditions, the sphinx represents the animal nature over which reason (human head) rises, guiding instincts and passions.
Decorating outdoor spaces with reproductions of large classical sculptures like this Sphinx of Naxos brings the cultural and aesthetic richness of ancient Greek art to our homes. When we incorporate these sculptures into our gardens and terraces, we infuse an air of nobility and serenity into our favorite outdoor corners. Stone, cast bronze, or molded marble with resin used to replicate these figures withstand outdoor weather well, ensuring the durability and resilience of these pieces exposed to the elements. Aging patinas, which give the appearance of stone and marble beautified by the passage of time, add a touch of timeless beauty.
Motifs of nature or mythological beings, such as figures of lions, horses, sphinxes, or griffins, blend with the surrounding vegetation, creating a special connection between art and nature.
Decorating with reproductions of classical sculptures can transform our gardens into scenes of timeless beauty and serene contemplation where one can relax, reflect, and meditate.
