A little History about the Throne of Tutankhamun

This piece belongs to the grave goods found by Howart Carter in the tomb of the famous young pharaoh Tutankhamun, belonging to the XVIIIth Dynasty of Egypt and who had a short reign between 1336/5 and 1327/5 BC. This tomb was discovered in 1922 in the necropolis of the Valley of the Kings, being the only one found intact in this necropolis.

The original can be found in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, in a display case, along with the marvellous objects found in the tomb.

In its engravings and reliefs we find an allegorical and symbolic space. It is made of wood inlaid with gold, silver, glass paste and semi-precious stones such as carnelian, turquoise and lapis lazuli. Its dimensions are 100 cm. high by 54 cm. wide and 60 cm. deep. The legs are in the shape of lion’s claws and the arms are also topped with lion’s heads, in addition to the double crown and the cobra and vulture heads, symbols of the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. On the right arm we see the original name of the pharaoh Tutankhaton engraved on a cartouche, and on the left arm we find the name Tutankhamun, the pharaoh’s middle name, alluding to the religious restoration carried out during his reign after the Amarna period.

On the back of the throne, Tutankhamun is depicted with Queen Anjesenamon, daughter of Nefertiti and Akhenaten. A family scene can be seen in the affectionate attitude of the queen towards the king.  The god Aton extends his rays from on high, offering life to the kings, symbolised by the Ankh. The figures are in the typical Amarna style, with prominent jaws, bulging bellies, elongated skulls and long, stylised necks.
