The Allegory of Winter, is a marble sculpture made by the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon in 1783. The original is 145cm high and is in the Faber Museum in Montpellier.
The marble figure can be traced back to a series of models of allegorical representations of summer and winter. Unlike Baroque allegories of winter in the form of an old man or a woman warming herself by the fire, Houdon opted for the figure of a young woman. She has wrapped a cloth around her head and upper body, while her abdomen and legs are bare. The closed-legged pose harks back to the ancient motif of ‘Venus púdica’, but the nudity of the body part is a consistent element of the winter allegory. Houdon used these starting points as a justification for the creation of a highly erotic sculpture, which soon acquired great popularity.
