Sculpture of seated Guan Yin. Guanyin or Kuan-Yin is the name given in China to Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Guanyin is prayed to for mercy and help in difficult times. She is often depicted in a feminine form and is known as Kannon in Japan.

The Sanskrit name Avalokitesvara means “the lord who looks down,” while Guanyin means “one who hears the cries of the world.” In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a being on the path to Buddhahood and liberation. According to Mahayana Buddhism, Guanyin-Avalokitesvara vowed not to enter Nirvana until all beings were freed from the cycle of reincarnation and had attained enlightenment. The way to achieve this is by eliminating the causes of suffering through the Noble Eightfold Path, which consists of following a path of moderation and righteousness applied to all aspects of life, from moral conduct to spiritual development.
