Reproduction of the sculpture of Asclepius, God of Medicine, found in the sanctuary of Epidaurus. The original is located in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Epidaurus was home to one of the most important sanctuaries of Asclepius in Ancient Greece. These Asclepian sanctuaries were called asclepeions and were intended for the healing of the sick.

Asclepius, in Greek mythology, is the god of medicine and healing. Son of Apollo and the mortal Coronis, Asclepius was raised by the centaur Chiron, who taught him the arts of healing. He was revered as the protector of healers and physicians in ancient Greece, and later worshipped in Rome under the name Aesculapius. He is depicted as a mature man with a beard carrying a staff with a snake entwined, a symbol still used in modern medicine.

The temples dedicated to Asclepius, called “Asclepeios,” were healing centers where therapeutic methods were practiced alongside religious rituals. The sick sought the god’s aid by sleeping in the sanctuaries, believing that Asclepius would provide them with solutions and treatments for their ailments through messages transmitted in dreams.

The legacy of Asclepius endures today as a symbol of the pursuit of health and healing.

Decorating with statues representing Asclepius, the god of healing, expresses our aesthetic tastes as well as our personal or professional interests related to medicine.
