The sculpture of Archaic Athena that we reproduce is based on an original statue showed in the Acropolis Museum in Athens, dating back to 520 B.C.

Athena was born from the head of the king of the gods, Zeus, as an adult and armed woman. In the temple, there was a colossal statue of Athena Parthenos (“virgin”) created by the great Athenian sculptor Phidias in marble and gold. The temple’s pediments depict two scenes from the goddess’s life: her birth and her dispute with the sea god Poseidon for the patronage of Athens. She also protected Greek heroes such as Perseus and Odysseus. Her attributes include the olive tree, the owl, the helmet, the spear, the aegis, and the shield with the head of Medusa.
