Sarcophagus of Egyptian pharaoh. A recreation of an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, it can be opened, the interior is compartmentalized with shelves.
The word “sarcophagus” is of Greek origin and means “flesh eater.” In Egypt, the sarcophagus refers only to the coffin that was usually in direct contact with the mummy. In cases of sumptuous burials, the sarcophagus was perfectly nested within several boxes fitted into one another. These coffins were usually made of wood, and in the Late Period (1st millennium BC), of thick cartonage. Only the outermost box was made of stone, and it no longer retained a human shape but tended to take on a rectangular form. In the case of Pharaohs, the sarcophagus was often nested within larger ones, and the entire set was enclosed in one or more chapels.
