Rython of the pugilists. 16th century BC.
Rython is the ancient Greek word for a vessel for ritual libations. These vessels are characterised by a wide mouth at the top and a small cone-shaped hole at the end of the body. This well-preserved piece from Minoan culture depicts scenes of combat between pugilists and also the amazing bull-jumping performed by young Cretan men. The original of this piece is in the Museum of Heraklion in Crete.
