Roman mosaic “CAVE CANEM”. “Cave Canem” is a Latin warning (from cavere “to beware”, “to take care” and canis “dog”), meaning “Beware of the dog”. It became known from the discovery of a floor mosaic in the excavations of Pompeii (Naples, Italy).
During Roman domination, the use of mosaics for the decoration of floors, walls, and vaults was common, especially in the imperial era. Among the best-known mosaics are different versions of “cave canem,” which were placed at the entrance of Roman houses to warn of the presence of a home guardian dog, just as is still done today.
Decoration with reliefs that recreate Roman mosaics offers us the opportunity to achieve a unique fusion of history and art. These reliefs become standout elements in our spaces, adding a touch of distinction to our homes.
With these reproductions of mosaics, whether in relief or recreated following the ancient Roman technique of tesserae, we bring a touch of cultural and aesthetic refinement to our environments, both indoors, in living rooms, lobbies, libraries, and offices, and outdoors, on terraces and in gardens. Incorporating reproductions of Roman mosaics into our home decor creates a unique atmosphere that evokes the grandeur of ancient Rome, blending with contemporary design and style. Bas-reliefs and mosaics, turned into central pieces of the room, tell us stories of everyday life in Antiquity, creating a timeless connection between the past and the present.
