Scene with Achilles confronting Hector. Achilles, the Greek hero of the Iliad, fought to the death against the Trojan prince Hector, whose brother Paris provoked the Trojan War by abducting Helen, the wife of the king of Sparta, Menelaus.
The Iliad recounts how Achilles circled the city with Hector’s corpse tied to his chariot. Finally the king of Troy, Priam, begged Achilles to return his son’s body to him so that he could hold his funeral and give him a dignified burial.
Inspired by an 18th century relief, Hector, Zebríones and Polidamante, by Tommaso Piroli (1752 – 1824), based on a drawing by John Flaxman.
