Reproduction of a Greek relief with three of the nine muses: Clio, muse of history, Thalia, of comedy and Euterpe, of music. The Muses were the daughters of Jupiter and Mnemosine (memory). They protected and inspired the arts and sciences.
Like the Graces, they took part in all the meetings, rejoicings, concerts and feasts which the gods celebrated on Olympus. They were endowed with the admirable gift of being eternally young and beautiful. There were nine of them: Clio, Euterpe, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Thalia, Urania and Calliope.
