In Aphrodite’s favour are the subjects on the sides, one of which is the replica shown here. A naked girl playing the flute, reclining on a cushion and with her legs crossed, plays the double aulos, music for the celebration. The throne may have come from a shrine to the Aphrodite Urania, such as Locri in southern Italy or Erice in Sicily, which seems to personify both sacred and profane elements of her cult and function. This flat piece in the corner of the throne may have been covered with sculpted fleurons.
