Allegorical representation of alchemy expressing exoteric and esoteric knowledge – open and closed book – and the nine-step ladder that speaks of the path leading to the conquest of mystical knowledge.

The original is on the façade of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. On the central column between the doors of the cathedral is a medallion with a woman and a ladder with nine steps leaning on it, holding a book in one hand and a sceptre in the other. This image symbolises the Scala Philosophorum, the Philosopher’s Ladder, the nine stages of alchemical work leading to the Philosopher’s Stone, transmutation.
