Description
Reproduction of a bas-relief made in reconstituted marble (marble powder plus binder), finished by ageing with patinas from natural earths.
Measurements: Height: 48 cm. Width: 57 cm. Depth: 2 cm.
The plaque reproduced here is a copy of a terracotta work in the Musée du Louvre from Italy, dating from the 1st century BC-1st century AD. It represents the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. (Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities. Collection number : Cp 4171)
The wedding of the nymph Thetis and the Myrmidon king Peleus (a disciple of the centaur Chiron himself) was celebrated by the gods and gave rise to the mythical tale of the apple of discord. From the union of Thetis and Peleus was born the Hero Achilles, who would play a crucial role in the Trojan War. Achilles was one of the main protagonists and greatest warriors in Homer’s Iliad.
This plaque was recreated by the painter Robert Fagan (1761-1816) in a beautiful oil painting that inspired the creation of the bas-relief.
