Reproduction of the relief of the Disciples of Emmaus, located in the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos.
This relief is located in the northwest corner, north gallery, of the lower cloister of the Benedictine monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos. It is the work of the so-called ‘first Silos workshop’, which worked in Silos between the late 11th and early 12th centuries.
The scene, which depicts the appearance of the risen Christ to the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-25), is composed of three figures under the architraves. All the figures are nimbed and one of the disciples is carrying a book, no doubt the Gospel, while Jesus is holding a kind of staff. Significant is the veil hanging from Christ’s bag, which is a reference to the pilgrimage to Santiago, as the shell is an identifying symbol of the pilgrim on the Way of St. James.
