Greek relief of the muses

According to Greek mythology, the muses are the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. They were engendered, according to myth, on nine consecutive nights.

According to the Greek historian Pausanias S.II, initially the muses were three: (singing voice) Aoede, Melete (meditation) and Mneme (memory). Boards represented the preconditions of poetic art in the practice of religion.

Platon is in the year 401 BC approx. and, later, Neoplatonists authors, which makes nine muses the mediating between God and the poet or any intellectual creator.

The muses present in the arts are:

Calliope: Muse of eloquence and epic poetry. Its different artistic representations are a wreath of laurels, a book, a stylus and a tablet, a trumpet.

Clio: Is the Muse of history. Its different artistic representations are a wreath of laurels, a book or a parchment, a tablet, a stylus and a Swan.

Erato: Is the Muse of lyric art of Elegy. Their artistic performances with a lyre, a viola and a Swan.

Euterpe: Was the Muse of music. Its artistic representation is usually a flute (single or double).

Melpomene: Was the Muse of tragedy. It is represented with a Crown, with a sword or a tragic mask.

Polyhymnia: Is the Muse of rhetoric. It represents a serious gesture and a musical instrument (usually a body).

halia: Muse of comedy. He is usually depicted with an instrument of music (usually a viola), a comic mask and a parchment.

Terpsichore: Muse of the dance. It is depicted with a stringed musical instrument: a viola or a lyre.

Urania: Muse of astronomy and astrology. It is usually represented with a compas, a Crown of stars and a celestial globe.
