Description
Bas-relief realized in molded alabaster, with a polychromation in oil and a patina of aging.
This work represents the portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio, a Florentine painter of the Renaissance. This is one of the most attractive and subjective works which is located in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
The inscription says, “If only the art could reproduce the character and spirit! In all the world a more beautiful painting would not be found.”, followed by the date of death of the lady in Roman numbers, 1488.
