Heracles-Hercules: Son of Alcmene and Zeus. Author of countless feats and adventures, such as the Twelve Labours. Considered to be the Hellenic hero par excellence, his first feat was to strangle the two snakes that the goddess Hera, Zeus’ spouse, driven mad by her husband’s betrayal, sent to kill the newborn child. Herakles carried out many other tasks and after his death he married the goddess Hebe, the eternal youth. Iconography usually depicts him wearing the skin of Nemea, his mace, and his formidable bow. Herakles is the symbol of the valiant hero, to whom later stoicism was to some extent attracted to his cause.
