The Battle of San Romano or The Defeat of San Romano (Italian, Battaglia di san Romano) is a triptych or group of three paintings, originally for the Medici-Palace in Florence. It is made with egg tempera on wood and is located dispersed in three museums: The one we have here is in the National Gallery in London. Paolo Uccello fascinated by the problem of perspective, studied passionately in the books, it transfer it into its frescoes and paintings with such geometric rigor that they became completely unrealistic environments. The broken lances make reference to the problem of three-dimensionality, articulating a network of lines of visual perspective.
