National Museum of Athens. Athena, Goddess identified with Minerva in Roman culture. Daughter of Zeus and Metis. Zeus having swallowed Metis on the advice of Gaea and Uranus, Pallas Athena emerged from the head of Zeus fully armed. For this reason her most outstanding character is that of warrior Goddess, but she is also Goddess of reason and as such she is venerated in Athens. She presides over the arts, literature and philosophy. Also as Goddess of intelligence, she is the protector of the spinners and women who perform artisan works. Her ingenuity combined with her warlike character led her to invent the war helmet. Her attributes: the spear, the case and the aegis (goatskin breastplate) are faithfully represented in bronze.
