Achilles curing Patroclus. 5th century BC. Staatliche Museum. Berlin.
Achilles is the main hero of Homer’s Iliad and Patroclus is his great brother and friend, as tradition has it that they grew up together. Both of them are very active in the Trojan War. According to the tradition followed by Homer in the Iliad, the Greek army passed directly from Greece to Troy; but other legends refer to a first attempt that ended in failure. Instead of landing at the Troade, they landed at Mysia. Without realising their mistake, they set out to devastate the country, and Telepus, son of Herakles and king of those lands, appeared. During the battle, Patroclus was wounded by arrows and Achilles healed him. This is the scene depicted in this piece, another example of Greek art attributed to the painter Sosias, circa 500 BC.
