Relief “Venus and Mercury”. Recreation in relief based on a painting by the Flemish painter Bartholomäus Spranger (1546-1611). The original painting, painted around 1585, belonged to the art collection of Emperor Rudolf II, and is currently exhibited in the Museum of Art History in Vienna. This piece represents a scene with the goddess Venus accompanied by two cupids alongside Mercury, wearing the winged hat and carrying the caduceus.
In classical mythology, Venus, identified in Rome with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The myth tells of Venus’s birth from the waters, emerging from the foam generated by the fall into the sea of the genitals of the sky god, Uranus, mutilated by his son Cronos-Saturn. Venus is attributed with loves with various lovers, both gods and humans, from Vulcan, the god of smiths and fire, her legitimate husband, to his brother, Mars, the god of war, or Mercury, Hermes in Greece, the messenger of the gods.
Reproductions of sculptures and reliefs depicting mythological scenes, such as this relief of Venus and Mercury, add a touch of culture to the interior decoration of the favorite corners of our home, standing out for their elegance and beauty in living rooms, lobbies, libraries, and offices, enriching the atmosphere of these spaces with their profound meaning.
These classical reliefs based on works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods recall the influence of these styles on later art, which has survived to this day as a legacy of art inspired by Antiquity and its pursuit of timeless beauty.
