Relief “Scene with Stela,” based on a scene from the Hamilton Vase, exhibited in the British Museum. The original piece that inspired this relief is a Greek ceramic vase with red figures from Bari, dated to the 4th century BC. This vase was acquired by the British Museum in the 18th century as part of the collection of vases of the English ambassador to Naples, Sir William Hamilton. According to researchers, the vase was dedicated to Castor, one of the Dioscuri, the twin of Pollux. Initially, the stela was interpreted as an altar, but later it was believed to represent a column symbolizing Castor.
According to Greek mythology, the twins Castor and Pollux were the sons of Leda and Zeus, who transformed into a swan to seduce her. From the union with the king of Olympus, Leda laid two eggs: from one came Helena and Clytemnestra, and from the other, Castor and Pollux. Myths make Castor and Clytemnestra mortal and children of Leda’s husband, King Tyndareus, and Helena and Pollux, children of Zeus, and immortal.
Reproductions of classical reliefs representing scenes inspired by the mythology of ancient Greece stand out for their elegance and beauty, bringing a touch of culture to the decoration of our home. These reliefs can be placed on walls and niches, attracting attention and evoking curiosity and admiration in anyone who contemplates them. By incorporating these pieces into the design of a space, such as living rooms, libraries, or offices, we can merge the beauty of the past with contemporary aesthetics, creating a harmonious and personality-filled environment.
