The Roman goddess Proserpina (Persephone in Greek mythology) was the queen of the underworld, wife of Hades. Her symbol was the pomegranate fruit.
This relief is inspired by the work of Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882). For Rossetti, the female body was a symbol of all beauty.
