Description
We present a relief representing the Greek goddess Iris holding a Greek helmet. It is made in moulded marble (marble powder plus binder), and finished with the application of natural earth patinas.
Measurements:
Relief with frame: Height: 48 cm. Width: 38 cm. Depth: 4 cm.
Relief without frame: Height: 40 cm. Width: 30 cm. Depth: 2 cm.
This relief is based on a 19th century engraving by the engraver Thomas Baxter (1782-1821). The original plate is in the New York Public Library.
The goddess Iris was the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, and was known as the bearer of the rainbow. She was believed to travel the sky on golden wings, carrying messages from the gods to humans. Iris symbolises the connection between the gods and humanity.
