Relief “Oedipus and Sphinx”. Bas-relief inspired by Attic red-figure ceramic vessels (Greece, 5th century BC).

Ceramics were introduced to Greece at the end of the 3rd millennium BC, probably from the Near East. The forms evolved until reaching the classical Greek red-figure style, which we can appreciate in this relief interpretation of an Attic kylix from the 5th century BC.

According to Greek mythology, the Sphinx had the function of guarding the Sanctuary of Apollo, and to visitors, she proposed a riddle: “What creature goes on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?” Oedipus gave the correct answer to the riddle (“the man”), thus defeating the creature and escaping being devoured by her. This image symbolizes the struggle between human curiosity and the unknown.

The Sphinx, a mythological creature with a human head and a lion’s body, has played a prominent role in ancient, Renaissance, and neoclassical art, merging elements from Egyptian and Greek cultures. In Egypt, the Sphinx represents the divine guardian, linked to the Sun god and the pharaoh, as seen in the Great Sphinx of Giza. In Greece, it takes on a new dimension, appearing in myth as the creature that challenges Oedipus with its famous riddle.

The Sphinx personifies the enigma and mystery and symbolizes those who have been able to transcend and overcome their most instinctive and animal nature, reaching the highest human capabilities.
