Relief “Eros and Psyche.” The myth of Eros and Psyche tells the tale of the struggle for love and trust between Eros (or Cupid) and the princess Psyche. In mythology, Eros represented the overwhelming power of love, which, due to its strength, can also destroy. The word “psyche” can be translated as “life” and as “soul.”

According to the story, immortalized by Apuleius in his Metamorphoses (The Golden Ass), Psyche was the youngest and most beautiful of three sisters, daughters of a king of Anatolia. Aphrodite, jealous of her beauty, sent her son Eros to shoot an arrow at her, making her fall in love with the most horrible and vile man he could find. However, Eros fell in love with her and shot the arrow into the sea; when Psyche fell asleep, he carried her away to his palace, hiding his true identity from her. Upon discovering his secret, Cupid abandons her, and to regain his love, the young woman must overcome a series of obstacles imposed by the gods.

This immortal love story became a source of inspiration for the literature and art of later centuries.
