Bas-relief Dancing Maenad- left. Reproduction of a Roman copy, found in the Prado Museum. This relief represents a maenad dancing with a thyrsus and her head tilted towards the ground. The original is a Roman copy of a Greek relief sculpted in Athens in the late 5th century BCE.

One of the motifs that appear in numerous works of Roman and Greek art is that of Dionysus and the cults dedicated to this god. Dionysus, the god of wine, enthusiasm, and ecstasy, as well as his entourage of satyrs and maenads, become protagonists of scenes of the Dionysian cult represented in ceramics, sculptures, and paintings.

Maenads were the followers of Bacchus Dionysus. These women are frequently depicted in classical art, appearing in both painting, in Greek frescoes and ceramics, and in sculpture, in statues and reliefs, or in mosaics. They are often portrayed dancing in frenzy, dressed in flowing tunics and ivy crowns, and holding the thyrsus (staff) and other objects related to Dionysus and wine, such as jugs or grapes.

Maenads represent the celebration of the Dionysian cult, where spiritual liberation, ecstasy, and enthusiasm (en-theos, god within oneself) were experienced, the experience of union with the divine. Representations of maenads in art provide a fascinating window into the artistic expression of the beliefs and mysticism of ancient Greece.
