Decorative relief of child Zeus (Jupiter). In this architectural relief from the time of Augustus (31-14 BC), we see how the Curetes, with the sound of their shields, try to conceal the crying of the newborn Zeus, who is in the arms of the nymph Amalthea.
In Greek mythology, Zeus was the son of two Titans, Cronus and Rhea. Cronus (Time) had castrated and dethroned the previous ruler of the Cosmos, his own father, Uranus, the god of the Sky. The myth tells how the Titan Cronus, fearing that one of his children might do the same to him, began to devour them as soon as Rhea gave birth to them. At the birth of Zeus, Rhea gave Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes to devour instead of his son. She hid Zeus in a cave in Crete, entrusting his care to the nymph Amalthea (according to other versions, a goat), under the protection of the Curetes, young armed men who with their dances and loud rituals concealed Zeus’s crying to prevent Cronus from discovering him. Zeus grew up in secret, and as an adult, he confronted his father, freeing his siblings and establishing his dominion as king of the gods on Mount Olympus. The birth of Zeus marked the beginning of a new era in the Greek cosmos.
Reproductions of classical art, like this relief of young Zeus, bring a touch of refinement to the decoration of our home.
