The Amazonomachy in Greek mythology recounts the legendary battle between the Amazons and the Greeks. According to mythology, the Amazons were a tribe of warrior women who lived in the region of the Black Sea. In these representations, the Amazons are shown bravely fighting against an army of Greek warriors and heroes such as Heracles, Theseus, or Achilles.

This theme was widely represented in ancient Greece, appearing in various artistic forms, from paintings on ceramics to sculptural reliefs in Greek temples, with the sculptures on the metopes of the Parthenon in Athens being notable. The myth of the Amazons symbolized for the ancient Greeks the confrontation between civilization and barbarism, and possibly was inspired by the Scythian peoples, among whom there were also female warriors.

Among the most famous Amazons in myths are Hippolyta, whose belt was the target of one of Hercules’ Labors, or Penthesilea, who fought against Achilles in the Trojan War.
