Relief “Achilles and Priam,” reproduction based on an original by the sculptor Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). The theme is taken from the Trojan War and depicts the famous scene from Homer’s Iliad where Priam pleads with the mighty Achilles for the return of his son Hector’s body.
The Greek epic poem The Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC, narrates the events of the Trojan War, focusing on the events of the tenth and final year of the war. Through its 24 books, Homer provides a detailed portrayal of war, glory, honor, and human tragedy.
The first book of the Iliad begins with the poet narrating the wrath of the Greek hero Achilles, who withdraws from the battle. This decision brings devastating consequences for the Achaean army, including the death of Patroclus at the hands of the Trojan prince Hector. Seeking revenge, Achilles kills Hector in combat and disgraces his corpse by dragging it tied to his chariot, until King Priam presents himself before the Achaean warrior, begging him to return his son’s body for a proper burial.
Decorating with reproductions of bas-reliefs depicting scenes and characters from classical literature and mythology, such as this relief of Achilles and Priam, adds a special touch of timeless beauty to our home.
